In a recent survey by Gallup the conclusion was that most training doesn’t really work, or at best it produces a partial return. Their studies demonstrated in order to obtain real employee motivation personal values needed to be expressed at work, the environment should foster a strong social and emotional base and the work itself needed to carry significance.
The survey also pointed out interestingly that people don’t leave their job they leave their boss!
However, training and development can work when technical skills and leadership abilities are connected to personal development and genuine buy-in to the vision.
